Power is becoming the limiting factor at the site. Many existing cell sites were sized for earlier equipment, and adding capacity from the utility can be slow and costly, so each new round of upgrades, from added bands and massive MIMO today to 6G and edge compute next, can run into power limits. Edge sites face the same two linked constraints: getting enough reliable power in, and getting the heat out. Unlike large centralized campuses, edge sites often have limited utility capacity, constrained space and strict permitting requirements, and AI workloads are raising power densities beyond what traditional air cooling can handle. This session covers how tower owners, carriers and edge operators are finding the power, including utility upgrades, battery storage, generators, fuel cells and on-site renewables, the regulations governing fuel and batteries, and how to manage competing loads when radios and compute share one site. It also covers cooling, from advanced air systems to liquid and immersion cooling, and how energy efficiency, water use, noise, maintenance and remote monitoring shape site design. Panelists will discuss backup requirements tied to customer service levels, how power and cooling choices affect site selection and operating costs, and which sites can realistically take the next upgrades, 6G, edge compute or both. Attendees will learn how to assess a site’s power headroom and design resilient, efficient sites that keep running through outages and demand peaks, even at unstaffed locations.
