Nvidia has more demand for its products than it can fulfill, and yet the AI chipmaker has chosen to enter a new market: wireless infrastructure. The company has launched software and hardware for designing, simulating, training and deploying AI in the RAN, and it has taken an active leadership role in the AI-RAN Alliance, along with Ericsson, Nokia, Samsung, T-Mobile, and others. The AI-RAN Alliance’s working groups are studying AI solutions to enhance RAN performance, as well as the use of current AI tools to manage networks efficiently. The alliance is also studying the radio interface requirements for running AI and generative AI applications, with an eye to optimizing 6G for AI. What does all this mean for the engineers who develop and deploy wireless infrastructure? What will project managers, hiring managers, and finance managers need to know about AI-RAN?
