5G offers operators the ability to “slice” the network, offer bespoke services to business customers, and optimize performance by deploying resources and spectrum more efficiently. But in order to do all this, operators need more granular control over network elements. AT&T is addressing this opportunity by integrating intelligent, programmable capabilities within the RAN through smart applications (rApps) and a service management and orchestration (SMO) framework. Meanwhile, Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile, along with nine other global operators, are part of a joint venture with Ericsson’s Vonage and Google. The operators plan to open their networks to make advanced capabilities accessible through a global platform for combined network APIs. How will the wireless workforce need to adapt to programmable networks, and what new revenue opportunities will these create for operators?
